Sometimes it's just the small things

Hello again! We’ve been so busy here lately cleaning and moving things around and unpacking and decorating …

My son and his little family moved out of our house and into their own place about 10 days ago, and so we’ve been unpacking all the things that we had put into our storage space to make room for them, and re-redecorating (no, that’s not a typo!) the 3 rooms that they occupied. I tell ya, it’s like moving house all over again! Who would have thought! A new office for me, hubby’s man cave and our linen/wine-making room – all for future blogs 🙂

So on Sunday, I had planned to take a break from all the carpet cleaning and dusting and unpacking and moving things around, and just, well, relax a little – right after I cleaned up the kitchen a little after breakfast. But, a quick kitchen clean-up turned into aa hour and a half-long deep clean (my kitchen’s pretty small), the end of which made me feel strangely satisfied. So much for relaxing! Does this ever happen to you?

But, it’s the little things, the small chores, that were the most rewarding. They slowed me down a little and made me feel like I’d actually accomplished something:

In the middle of this cleaning frenzy, I noticed that the olive oil dispenser was looking a little low, so I decided to top it up

which lead me to get round to all the other small things I’d been meaning to do all week – like re-fill the spice jars

and do something about the fresh herbs that were wilting and about to die.

I’d seen this one on a Jamie Oliver cooking show where he had chopped up fresh herbs that were going to waste in someone’s kitchen, put them in ice trays, covered them with olive oil and put them in the freezer.

As you can see, I already had some that I’d frozen previously. It’s a good way of storing fresh herbs instead of throwing them away (like I used to do!). When you need, say, a teaspoon, of a herb like Dill, Cilantro or Parsley (to name a few), just pop one out of the ice tray and add it to your cooking. I have 2 different herbs in these trays, and so in order to know what they are once frozen, I have marked the side of the ice tray with a black marker.

Feeling very good about myself, I stood back to admire my gleaming kitchen

which passed inspection by the ever-watchful Supervisor and stayed like that for about … oh… 15 minutes or so 🙂

Still feeling very smug, I went upstairs and changed the winter bedding to summer bedding. Just a little bit of order amongst the chaos.

Sometimes, it really is the small things that are the most rewarding.
