I didn’t find out about this until yesterday when our Moroccan friend ,who runs the clothing store, enlightened us.
Maspalomas Gay Pride, which started in 2001, is one of Europe’s biggest and most-celebrated gay events, with tens of thousands of locals and tourists flocking to Gran Canaria each Spring. Maspalomas and Playa del Inglis is a very popular gay hotspot any time of the year thanks to its dreamy beaches, the year-round temperate climate and of course the Yumbo Center – an LGBTQ enclave of bars, restaurants, and clubs. During Maspalomas Pride, every year in May however, things reach an all time high, with thousands of pride enthusiasts descending upon this island paradise to celebrate their pride in the sun.
Every year, you can expect the streets of this beachside town to get packed with throngs of gay guys and girls from around Europe and the rest of the world. Taking place in and around the infamous Yumbo Center and Playa del Ingles, the popular duned-beach, Maspalomas Gay Pride is one of Gran Canaria’s biggest LGBTQ events. The event usually transpires over the course of roughly ten days, and includes a pride parade along with lots of themed parties.
The streets of Maspalomas are filled with ever growing crowds during the annual Maspalomas Gay Pride. Maspalomas Gay Pride was first held in 2001 in the southern part of the Gran Canaria island when the City Council of San Bartolome de Tirajana along with a few Yumbo Center entrepreneurs joined forces to create what is now the largest event on the island. Since then it has grown exponentially, attracting an estimated 100,000 attendees each year.
Gay Pride Maspalomas continues to be a beacon for LGBTQ rights, and is the biggest supporters against discrimination and violence against against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals. By celebrating an incredible Pride annually, and supporting the local LGBTQ culture of Gran Canaria throughout the year, Gay Pride Maspalomas aims to promote respect and recognition for the LGBTQ community, and eradicate any form of stigma or judgement.
Parties, exhibitions, parade floats, shows, concerts, the funniest nights in your favorite bars in the Yumbo Center, singers, dancers and drag queens everywhere, Maspalomas Pride, one of the craziest and funniest Pride in the world!
Pride 2022 runs from May 5 to 15, and will include a jam-packed 10-day program of parties, boat trips, beach festivals, and of course the extravaganza that is the street parade in Playa del Inglés on May 14th, which I can’t wait to see!
The highlight of Gay Pride Maspalomas, the incredible Pride Parade, will take place on May 14 and I can’t wait to go! There will be floats, music, and loads of people marching in solidarity with pride.
See you next week with an update 🙂
